Once Again, Medical Technologists (MT) and Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) Are Top Careers

Medical technologists (MT) and clinical laboratory scientists (CLS) were declared among “The 50 Best Careers of 2011” by U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) in its annual survey of high-demand careers. Editors at the respected news magazine declared “clinical lab technicians and technologists” to be the “unsung heroes of the healthcare industry.”

Medical technologists and clinical laboratory scientists had a prominent place in the USNWR’s special issue featuring “The 50 Best Careers of 2011,” published on Dec 6. 2010. MTs, pathologists, and clinical laboratory managers will see the MT and CLS career opportunity profiled under “Best Careers 2011: Lab Technician.” (more…)

Social Networking Can Help Clinical Labs Recruit More and Better Medical Technologists

Only two lab companies in the United States currently tap social networking to meet their med tech staffing needs


Everyone in the clinical laboratory testing industry knows that there is an acute shortage of medical technologists (MTs) and clinical laboratory scientists (CLSs). But laboratory professionals may be astonished to learn that their MT recruiting programs consistently fail to hire adequate numbers of MTs and CLSs because they nearly always advertise and recruit in the wrong places!

PAML and Centura Health Announce Creation of New Clinical Pathology Laboratory Company in Denver

It’s the second new hospital laboratory joint venture for PAML in past eight days


Earlier today, PAML and Centura Health of Denver, Colorado, announced the creation of a new clinical pathology laboratory company. It will be called “Colorado Laboratory Services” (CLS) and will operate as an LLC (limited liability company). CLS represents the second major hospital laboratory outreach joint venture for PAML in the past eight days.

Centura Health is Colorado’s largest integrated health system. It owns 13 hospitals and its flagship is 593-bed St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver. Its hospitals are strategically located throughout the Denver metropolitan area and will provide CLS with a local presence to serve physicians’ offices located around each of these medical campuses.

New Molecular Diagnostics Training Program at Ferris State for Clinical Pathology Lab Professionals

Medical technologists and clinical laboratory scientists will study the hottest new genetic technologies

There’s a new bachelor’s degree program in molecular diagnostics that will help expand the number of medical technologists (MT) and clinical laboratory scientists (CLS) available to work in the nation’s clinical pathology laboratories. The announcement was made last month by Ferris State University (FSU) in Big Rapids, Michigan.

“Continued growth in personalized medicine has created demand for practitioners with this skill set,” said Ellen Haneline, Dean of Ferris State’s College of Allied Health Sciences.  “Combined with expansion on our local medical community, these factors were the impetus for establishing this cutting-edge degree program centered upon molecular diagnostics. This new degree will enable Ferris to become a recognized leader in providing clinical laboratory education and will particularly fill a need for this type of training in West Michigan.”

Learn why medical labs shoot themselves in the foot when advertising and interviewing candidate!

Probably the single most publicized trend in laboratory medicine is the shortage of medical technologists (MTs), clinical laboratory scientists (CLS), and medical laboratory technologists (MLTs). This shortage prevents many clinical laboratory managers from keeping their laboratories staffed at authorized levels.

Equally publicized is the looming mass exodus of Baby Boomers from clinical laboratory positions as they hit retirement age. The oldest Baby Boomers, born in 1946, are turning 63 this year! They are already eligible for early Social Security benefits and just 24 months from turning 65-the age when full Social Security and Medicare benefits are available to them.
