First Health Park Opens in Georgia: Brings Integrated Clinical Services to the Community, Including Clinical Pathology Laboratory Testing

Health parks are one way health systems will respond to both the demand for integrated care and the need to expand access to those newly-insured because of the ACA law

In Georgia, WellStar Health System, a five-hospital health system, recently opened the first of a series of planned “health parks.” This is a new concept that assembles many different types of health services into a single setting. Medical laboratory testing is expected to be one of the clinical services contained within these health parks.

The arrival of health parks must be viewed from the perspective of accountable care organizations (ACO), medical homes, and similar care delivery models that share the goal of delivering integrated clinical care to patients. Given the essential role of clinical laboratory testing in diagnosis and treatment, it is likely that health parks will establish and offer in-house medical laboratory testing capabilities. (more…)

Big Health Insurers Acquire Health IT Horsepower to Support Their Accountable Care Organizations

Actions by major insurers indicate that ACOs operated by hospitals will have competition

Until recently, most media coverage about nascent accountable care organizations (ACOs) centered on the plans of major hospitals and health systems to organize ACOs within their communities. Now comes news that major health insurers are making sizeable investments as they prepare to launch their own ACOs.

These developments could be auspicious for local clinical laboratories and anatomic pathology groups. It could mean that in many regions around the United States there will be ACOs operated by hospitals/health systems that compete against ACOs operated by health insurance companies. In turn, that would mean more customers for lab testing services in these cities and towns.

AMA Survey Reveals That Physician Interest Lags In ACO Participation

Many physicians say they lack specific details about the care model and how it will reimburse providers

In its own news service, the American Medical Association (AMA) reports lagging interest by physicians when they are asked about their participation in accountable care organizations (ACO). This survey of AMA members was conducted last fall.

According to an article at amednews.com (AMN), this survey found that—although many physicians are familiar with the concept—a significant number of them indicate they will either opt out of an ACO or unsure whether they will participate in an ACO.

Medicare Officials Announce Bundled Reimbursement Initiative and Clinical Pathology Laboratory Tests Are to Be Included

“Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Initiative” will be voluntary for hospitals, physicians, and other providers, including medical laboratories

Yesterday, Medicare officials took the first steps to implement a program for bundled Medicare payments by issuing documents which describe how this program would work. At least two of the four models for bundled reimbursement will include clinical pathology laboratory tests as part of the bundled care arrangement.

Clinical laboratory managers and pathologists will want to pay close attention to this development. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) titled this new effort the “Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Initiative.” It is a voluntary program. Only those providers who submit proposals and bids which are accepted will be paid through this program. The goal is to encourage different providers to collaborate on the care of a patient. Each of the four models for bundled healthcare has a slightly different payment arrangement.

How Clinical Pathology Laboratories Can Add Value to Physicians Practicing in the Medical Home Model

Rapid, RNA Probe-Based Multiplex Assay Can Help Doctors More Accurately Diagnose Vaginitis

New models for integrated healthcare, such as medical homes and accountable care organizations (ACO), are moving from concept to reality. This will create different ways for clinical pathology laboratories to add value to patient care.

One important attribute of these new integrated healthcare delivery vehicles is the greater emphasis given to primary care. Health policymakers want primary care physicians, OB/GYNs, and pediatricians to be more proactive in detecting and treating disease while encouraging the patient to more actively maintain optimal health.
