Point-of-Care DNA Sequencer Inching Closer to Widespread Use as Beta-Testers Praise Oxford Technologies’ Pocketsize, Portable Nanopore Device

MinION could help achieve NIH’s goal of $1,000 human genome sequencing and in remote clinics and outbreak zones shift testing away from medical laboratories

Point-of-care DNA sequencing  technology is edging ever closer to widespread commercial use as the Oxford Nanopore MinION sequencer  draws praise and registers successes in pre-release testing.

A pocketsize gene-sequencing machine such as the MinION could transform the marketplace by shifting DNA testing to remote clinics and outbreak zones while eliminating the need to return samples to clinical laboratories for analysis. Such devices also are expected to increase the need for trained genetic pathologists and medical technologists. (more…)

Consumer Reports Ranks Smaller and Non-Teaching Hospitals Highest in Infection Prevention

Clinical laboratory professionals and pathologists are part of multi-disciplinary efforts to curb healthcare-associated infections

One interesting fact about a national list of hospitals that rank highest in infection prevention is that they are mostly smaller and non-teaching hospitals. This was one finding from a recent survey conducted by Consumer Reports.

The survey tracked MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), Clostridium difficile (C. diff) and other common bacteria that are the source of most healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). These are also known as nosocomial infections when referring specifically to hospital-acquired infections. (more…)

California’s Massive Microarray SNP Genotyping Project Processed Genetic Data from More Than 100,000 Volunteers and Characterized 70 Billion Genetic Variants in 14 months

Faster sequencing speed and accuracy could fuel growth of biomarkers and lead to development of new medical laboratory tests and therapeutic drugs

Trailblazing methods used to create a treasure trove of genetic data from 100,000 Californians could pay dividends for clinical laboratories and pathology groups if similar projects identify novel biomarkers and fuel the development of new clinical laboratory tests and therapeutic drugs.

In fact, California is once again in the forefront, this time with a major program to create a big database of genetic data. The program is called the Genetic Epidemiology Research on Adult Health and Aging (GERA). It is a collaboration between the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Research Program on Genes, Environment, and Health (RPGEH) and the Institute for Human Genetics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) that began in 2009. As ICD-10 Implementation Approaches October 1 Deadline, Clinical Pathology Laboratories Wonder if Providers and Payers Will Make a Smooth Transition

Medical laboratories and anatomic pathology groups could face payment delays if physicians fail to code lab test claims properly using ICD-10 codes

Just weeks remain before the implementation to ICD-10 begins. This will be a delicate time for clinical laboratories and anatomic pathology groups, since labs must rely on physicians to provide accurate ICD codes that labs must submit on test claims in order to be reimbursed by payers.

The much-delayed shift from ICD-9 to ICD-10 diagnosis codes will take place on Thursday, Oct. 1. When clocks strike midnight, years of debate over whether the conversion will create a financial hardship on physicians—and in turn disrupt payments to clinical laboratories and anatomic pathology groups—will begin to be answered.

The Medicare program requires appropriate ICD codes on medical laboratory test claims for Medicare patients. That is one reason why clinical laboratories and anatomic pathology are financially vested in a smooth conversion process. All Medicare Part B claims for medical laboratory tests must be submitted with an appropriate International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code provided by the physician who ordered the lab tests. The Medicare program will not reimburse lab test claims without an appropriate ICD code. (more…)

CLMA’s Inaugural ICE Award Recognizes the Initiative at Seattle Children’s Hospital Laboratories that Decreased Unnecessary Genetic Tests while Contributing to Better Patient Outcomes

The Clinical Laboratory Management Association is encouraging medical laboratories to submit abstracts about their programs to deliver more value to patients and physicians through the use of clinical pathology laboratory tests

Now, more than ever, the house of laboratory medicine needs to be publishing clinic studies and evidence that the money spent on appropriate medical laboratory testing is returned tenfold from improved patient outcomes and substantial reductions in the cost per episode of care that can be associated with the use of those lab tests.

It is this credible evidence that can help shape healthcare policy in positive ways, while encouraging government and private payers to recognize the true value of clinical laboratory tests and thus establish adequate reimbursement to insure the continuation of high-quality lab testing services in the United States.
