Sandia National Lab’s Credit Card-Size Anthrax Detector Works as a Small Medical Laboratory in the Field

Sandia National Laboratories creates BaDx anthrax detection cartridge to aid global agriculture using technology that could be adapted for use by clinical laboratories

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) recently unveiled a credit-card-size anthrax detector that works like a portable medical laboratory in the field. Pathologists will recognize this as another example of how the newest diagnostic technologies are being used to create diagnostic tests for application in developing countries that lack a well-developed network of clinical laboratories.

Similar to the way a home-pregnancy test operates, this pocket-size anthrax detection cartridge relies on a lateral flow assay. It can make evaluating agricultural samples in developing countries “safer, easier, faster and cheaper,” according to a SNL news release. (more…)

Pathologists Watch as New Lab-on-a-Chip Technology Is Developed for Testing Patients in Doctor’s Offices

Goal is to Help Physicians Perform More Medical Laboratory Testing in Their Clinics

New microfluidic nanotechnology has the potential to create reliable “mini-labs” that can allow physicians to do many of the same medical laboratory tests in their offices that are currently performed in the today’s more complex clinical laboratories and anatomic pathology groups.

Some experts predict that recent advancements in lab-on-a-chip devices can make it possible for physicians to perform in-office many tests that are the mainstay of the medical laboratory industry, and possibly even produce superior results for a fraction of the cost. (more…)
