Improving patient-provider communication and speeding clinician workflow are two of the top 2014 game changers in healthcare information technology (HIT) cited by a recent report. Each of these top 2014 game changers can be expected to change how patients and physicians interact with their clinical laboratory and anatomic pathology providers.

Change in who owns office-based physician groups is a trend which can create new winners and losers among the nation’s independent medical laboratories
Physicians today are more willing to practice medicine as employees than as partners or owners of their medical group. This signals a significant shift in the market for clinical laboratory testing and anatomic pathology services.
This new development will require that all medical laboratory organizations to rethink how they serve office-based physicians. New strategies will be required, both to better meet the clinical service needs of these employee-physicians, as well as to redirect sales and marketing programs to the new decision makers. (more…)

Clinical laboratory test ordering and results reporting is needed for AMA’s physician web platform to have wide appeal with physicians
In the drive to achieve clinical integration and a universal electronic health record (EHR), a credible new player with deep financial pockets is poised to enter the field. The American Medical Association (AMA) announced that it is preparing to launch a web-based platform that will deliver a host of clinical and practice management tools to physicians. Included will the capability for clinical laboratory test ordering and lab test reporting.
Last month, the AMA entered into an agreement with LifePoint Informatics of Glen Rock, New Jersey. The AMA will utilize the LifePoint.WEB clinical order entry and results to support medical laboratory test ordering/results reporting with its web-based platform.
