Recent White Papers detail solutions for medical laboratories and pathology groups
Medical laboratories and pathology groups are facing enormous levels of change in their clinical, regulatory and financial environments. As the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is implemented. labs see downward pressure on reimbursement at the federal and payer level, coupled with increased emphasis on efficiency and quality. Couple that with a shift from fee-for-service reimbursement to fee-for-quality reimbursement strategies, and clinical laboratories and pathology groups are pushed to find tools to increase their competitiveness.
DarkDaily.com is pleased to offer two recently published free White Papers which can show laboratory managers and pathologists how to more effectively make changes to improve workflow, increase efficiency and safety, and identify, evaluate and solve problems as they are occurring.
“Harnessing the Power of Real-Time Analytics to Achieve World Class Performance in Clinical Laboratories and Pathology Groups: How innovative medical laboratories can combine analytics with medical laboratory information systems to improve lab operations, cut costs, and boost productivity” outlines how laboratories can draw on business, logistical and medical data inherent in the laboratory information systems (LIS) to more effectively make changes to improve workflow, increase efficiency, and identify, valuate, and solve problems as they occur.
Another White Paper, “Advances in Pathology Tissue Management Reduce Formalin Use, Improve Quality and Cut Costs” offers a look at the risks of formalin use, trends in formalin use and disposal, and how laboratory and operating room workflow is affected by it. Alternate methods for storing and preserving pathology specimens is introduced as are descriptions of changes to workflow, benefits in terms of healthcare worker safety, and the safety and economic benefits of these changes.
DarkDaily readers can access free White Papers on a variety of topics. In a typical month, DarkDaily.com is visited by pathology laboratory managers and professional in as many as 180 different countries across the globe.

PCR testing moves out of the clinical pathology laboratory and into a teen-aged boy’s bedroom laboratory
In a demonstration of how evolving technologies make it easier and cheaper to operate clinical laboratories, a teen-age boy in Yorkshire, England, has built his own DNA analyzer and identified the gene mutation that gives his brother red hair.
That demonstration allowed Fred Turner, age 17, to silence the endless teasing from friends about how he and his red-haired brother, Gus, probably had different fathers. It also won for Fred the award of “UK Young Engineer of the Year 2013.” (more…)

Manhattan Labs is an early-adopter of the trend toward increased use of lab-specific CRM solutions with the goal of gaining competitive advantage
To improve its competitive position in the tough clinical laboratory testing market of New York City, one medical laboratory company has implemented a cloud-based, lab-specific customer relationship management (CRM) service that delivers real-time information to its sales team in the field and its operations team in the lab.
This is consistent with an important trend gathering momentum within the clinical laboratory industry. That trend is the use of middleware and similar informatics solutions that serve up detailed information about the performance and operation of the lab in real time. Typically, these informatics solutions support real-time management dashboards.
Pathologists and clinical laboratory managers recognize that good client relations can be the difference between retaining and losing clients—and the revenue associated with their medical laboratory test referrals.

The study found that a Robotic vapor-dispersing device kills and prevents spread of Drug-Resistant Organisms in high-risk patients by 64%
There is a new technology for disinfecting healthcare facilities that is likely to be useful for clinical laboratories and anatomic pathology groups.
A team at Johns Hopkins University Hospital recently published a study about their institution’s use of hydrogen peroxide vapor to disinfect hospital rooms.
The study was conducted over two and one-half years and involved hospital rooms used by thousands of patients. The goal of this study was to verify the effectiveness of a new robot-like device, known as Bioquell Q-10. This system disperses a hydrogen peroxide vapor to disinfect hospital rooms and was described in a news release issued by Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University Hospital. (more…)

Pathologists will welcome this law, which provides more latitude for federal regulators should a medical laboratory inadvertently refer a proficiency testing specimen
Last Tuesday, the clinical laboratory testing industry gained an important measure of regulatory relief after President Obama signed into law the Taking Essential Steps for Testing (TEST) Act of 2012. This law removes severe penalties for medical laboratories that inadvertently violate proficiency testing (PT) requirements.
More specifically, the language of the TEST Act provides guidance to federal regulators to resolve an issue concerning the inadvertent referral of PT specimens as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) statute of 1988. (See The Dark Report “Congress May Respond to Tough CLIA PT Penalties,” August 6, 2012.) (more…)
