Efforts to Integrate Molecular Imaging and Molecular Diagnostics Are Happening Now

Many pathologists are wondering what it means when one of the world's biggest corporations in imaging and radiology, like Siemens AG  (NYSE:SI), suddenly spends billions to buy lab testing companies and starts telling the world that diagnostic medicine's future lies in the integration of molecular imaging (in vivo) with molecular diagnostics (in vitro).

After all, talk about integrating the services of radiologists and pathologists presents plenty of threats to both medical specialties-and most physicians are justifiably concerned about radical changes to their scope of medical practice! On the other hand, medicine is entering the genomic age. Daily we learn of new discoveries about DNA, RNA, and proteins that promise to transform vast swaths of clinical care. These breakthroughs are likely to cause radiologists, pathologists, and other physician specialists, to come together and practice an integrated form of medicine totally unlike what we know today.

The Dark Report  has been investigating the concept of in vivo/in vitro integration and has learned that some radiologists and pathologists are already crossing traditional boundaries as they take early steps to integrate molecular imaging and molecular diagnostics. These first movers in their fields are showing the power of integrated diagnostics to provide physicians with powerful new tools to detect and treat a growing number of diseases.

These investigations into the integration of molecular imaging and molecular diagnostics encouraged The Dark Report to invite pathologists, radiologists, and informatics experts to share their case studies and molecular breakthroughs at MOLECULAR SUMMIT 2008 .  It will take place in Philadelphia on February 5-6, 2008 at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel  and will be the first-ever global gathering on the integration of in vivo and in vitro diagnostics.

For pathologists and laboratory directors, this will provide a highly valuable look at what is happening at the cutting edge of molecular medicine, in both imaging and diagnostics. In addition to molecular pathologists, and molecular radiologists, there will be experts from the financial community to discuss the exploding opportunities in biomarkers and personalized medicine.

As laboratory medicine moves into the bold new world of genomic medicine, molecular technologies will lead the way. Molecular Summit 2008 offers anyone working in laboratory medicine with an unprecedented view of how the profession is likely to evolve. By design, Molecular Summit 2008 will be a relatively small, intimate gathering. Those interested in participating should visit http://www.molecular-summit.com/ to see the full program and register while space remains available!
