Maul

Patrick Maul is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and seasoned clinical laboratory consultant with an extensive background in laboratory management, cost management, and operational improvement. He has specialty interests in outreach/marketing, transfusion medicine, informatics, histology, molecular diagnostics, microbiology nuclear medicine, emergency medicine, and medical technology programs.

Prior to joining BD Diagnostics in 2004, Maul provided consulting services to hospitals and clinical laboratories as a Senior Consultant with Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics. He uses his clinical expertise to guide clients through all aspects of lab operations including redesign, optimization and expense reduction. To enhance the development of expanding laboratories, he has successfully conducted programs of staff redesign, multi-hospital consolidation, and laboratory construction. Maul has also served as an American Red Cross Advisory Member and Committee Chairman for the Greater Cleveland Hospital Association Laboratory Purchasing Association. Maul will be speaking at this year’s Lab Quality Confab conference in New Orleans.

 


 

 

Sumwalt

Dennis Sumwalt currently leads Sanford Health System to integrate laboratory resources and capabilities of all regional medical centers, rural hospitals, reference laboratories, and clinics. Sanford has labs in 60 locations in the upper Midwest, employs 600 FTEs, and performs more than 10 million tests per year.

During a 20 year consulting career, Dennis provided insightful analysis and cutting-edge improvement for a wide range of business, operational, and quality issues facing medical laboratories. With clients in 40 states, he led projects in supply expense reduction, staff and operations redesign, and facilities consolidations and mergers. His unique combination of clinical background, business analysis and development, and collaborative communication style drove many projects to achieve sustainable improvement results.

He has held executive positions in lab operations, management, and business development, including Division Manager of Pathology Medical Laboratories and President of Medical Service Laboratory, a regional reference laboratory serving physicians and hospitals in the U.S. and Mexico.

Sumwalt holds a Bachelors in Microbiology and a minor in Biochemistry from San Diego State University. He has extensive post-graduate training in management, strategic planning, and business development. He is licensed in CA and ND as a clinical laboratory scientist, is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and is nationally registered as a medical technologist and certified laboratory director.
