I note with interest your article regarding pathology services in Middlemore and Auckland Hospital's. Had the author traveled outside the Auckland region, they would have found in the majority of the rest of New Zealand hospital laboratories providing services to the community and specialists outside of the hospital. A number of hospital laboratories are privately run (e.g. Palmerston North, Dunedin, Nelson, Blenheim, Gisborne) and at Hastings Hospital a joint partnership between the public hospital and private laboratory ensures the hospital laboratory performs 50% of the automated tests from the community and all of the histology. Auckland Hospitals are by far the exception to the rule, therefore highlighting the inaccuracy of your article stating "hospital laboratories in New Zealand tend to provide testing primarily for inpatients and for outpatients seen by specialists who practice within the hospital’s facilities."
